Waymo Recalls Robotaxi Fleet for School Bus Issue
Waymo Robotaxi Recall
Waymo is implementing a voluntary software recall for its autonomous robotaxi fleet to address issues with vehicles failing to stop for school buses with deployed stop signs and flashing lights. The recall, which will be filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration early next week, follows an investigation that identified instances of Waymo vehicles passing stopped school buses in Atlanta and Austin, Texas. Mauricio Peña, Waymo's chief safety officer, acknowledged that while the company's vehicles have fewer crashes involving pedestrians than human drivers, they recognize the need to improve behavior in these specific scenarios. This marks another software recall for Waymo in 2025, following previous recalls related to vehicles hitting gates, chains, and similar objects, as well as incidents involving crashes into telephone poles and repeated collisions with the same pickup truck being towed.
