Sony Acquires Additional Stake in Peanuts Franchise to Reach 80 Ownership
Sony is purchasing an additional 41 percent stake in the Peanuts franchise from Canadian firm WildBrain for approximately $460 million which will increase its total ownership to 80 percent. This acquisition builds on Sony previous purchase of 39 percent of the franchise back in 2018. The deal which is still subject to regulatory approvals will make Peanuts a consolidated subsidiary of Sony once completed. The Schulz family will retain the remaining 20 percent stake in the franchise that features beloved characters like Snoopy and Charlie Brown created by Charles M. Schulz 75 years ago. Sony Music Entertainment Japan CEO Shunsuke Muramatsu expressed enthusiasm about leveraging Sony global network and expertise to further elevate the Peanuts brand value. The franchise has expanded significantly since its 1950 comic strip origins to include animated series cartoon musicals and movies that made Snoopy a household name worldwide.
