Google to Discontinue Free Dark Web Monitoring Service Next Year
Google has announced plans to shut down its free dark web monitoring tool starting early next year, ending a service that alerted users when their personal information appeared on the dark web. The tool, which was initially exclusive to Google One subscribers before becoming available to all users in mid-2024, allowed individuals to monitor their name, email address, and phone number for potential data breaches. In an email announcement, Google explained that the decision to discontinue the service was based on user feedback indicating that the reports did not provide helpful next steps after a breach was detected. While the tool informed users about compromised information and showed which data breaches were responsible, it lacked guidance on remedial actions. Google will cease monitoring for new dark web results on January 15, 2026, and will remove access to existing reports from user accounts on February 16. Users who wish to delete their monitoring profile can do so immediately through the tool's official page.
